Scituate High School

Introduction

Scituate High School is located at 94 Trimtown Road in North Scituate, RI and is the only public secondary school in the town. (Wikipedia) . Scituate really isn't that big of a town and it is one of those places where everyone basically knows each other. It is also a very quiet town due to the fact that there is a lot of woods surrounding and not many stores. The high school is located pretty much in the center of town convenient to everyone. Along with the high school, the Scituate Middle school building is also attached, but it has its own section. It has an enrollment rate of roughly 535 students and it serves grades 9-12 for the entire town. (Wikipedia) This report is designed to help parents see what the Scituate School system is like incase they want to send their children there or it could also help out a teacher who is looking for a job. This report should cover every aspect of the school and what is has to offer in terms of academic and non academic activities.

Community Background

Scituate High School encourages all students to try their best to achieve academic and social excellence. Along with the curriculum taught within the classroom, teachers and staff throughout the school try to make their students effective problem solvers and life long learners. (Wikipedia) I interviewed one of my friends from my town that has been enrolled in Scituate public schools his whole life and he told me that he overall had a very good experience at Scituate High and if he could have changed one thing it would have been to have more people enrolled in the school. He explained to me that he was provided with a really helpful guidance councilor who led him in the right direction in terms of college choices. He agreed that he had a very smooth transition into college and he can thank Scituate for part of that. The only negative aspect of the school he told me about was that some of his subject teachers were better than others when it came to teaching them what they needed to know. (Snow, Seth)

There is not a lot of diversity within this high school with only 1% of the student population coming from ethnic backgrounds. 90% of the student do not receive special education services while 9% stay at home or are hospitalize and 1% is self-contained. The school's climate ranks lower than state standard along with parent involvement and instruction. This high school has a drop out rate of 9% which is pretty good considering the state's is 15%. While the state's attendance rate is 90%, Scituate is ahead of their game with 95%. One of the things that is concerning to me regarding this high school is the suspension rate. In the year of 2004-2005 there were 28 suspensions which I find kind of high. Two of these suspensions were due to skipping class or detention, four were related to controlled substance abuse and seven were due to disorderly conduct. When the student body was questioned about using tobacco products, we came in lower than the state number, but when asked about alcohol consumed on the weekends we tested above the state norm. One of the subjects that our number are down in also is when the teachers were asked if the school provides a health promoting environment with only 60% agreeing opposed to the state expectation of 100%. District Summary

One of the main things that Scituate is known for throughout the state is its profound music program. It is the only kind in the state to offer audition-only symphonic ensemble. This ensemble contains the most talented musicians in the school and is annually cited as one of the best bands in the state. In 2002 the head of Scituate's Music department was chosen as a recipient of Rhode Island's Teacher of the Year Award. (Wikipedia) Along with this wonderful music program, Scituate offers a variety of sports to chose from including their girls 2006 soccer state champions. After school you can also find many clubs to join that interest you such as yearbook club and debate club to name a few. When I researched to see if this school was meeting NCLB's progess, it said that it had no status for Scituate so I think that means that this school does not follow NCLB standards.

When it came to academic performances, Scituate almost always suceeds beyond expectations. In the English Department the state's target score was 83.8 and Scituate ended up getting a 91.7. With a target of 72.5 in the mathematical department, this school again passed with an 88.9. (RI Report Card) Surprisingly, our state's graduation rate is only 85.2, but since 2006 Scituate has had 90.8 students graduate at the end of the year. Overall, this high school met all nine of the targets the state was looking for. Concerning the SAT's, the student's scores were at least 32 points above the state's.

Under the topic of characteristics of students attending this school, there really ins't much to say but there are some facts the public should realize. 6% of the students are eligible for free lunch, none of the kids are receiving ESL education and 5% of the student body are receiving special education services. Another interesting fact we discover is that only 60% of the student's mothers in Scituatecompleted college. This tells us that a little under half of the students in the school really don't have huge academic role models to look up to. If more of their parents had continued their education past high school, they could help push and guide their children through school. (Info Works)

School Analysis

One of the major concerns and gaps that I see in this school are the kids that cause trouble. Even though 91.31% of kids attend school regularly, there are a handful of kids who are simply there to have a good time and try to do whatever they want. Over the course of the past years there has been some suspensions throughout the school but the rate isn't abnormally high. (Infor Works) If I were a student in Scituate, I might watch out who my friends were for the four years I would be there. Along with school troublemakers, there are also the 10.67% of students who drop out of this specefic high school.

The majority of teachers at this high school seemed highly concerned with their student's success throughout their academic career. The math department especially wants to make sure that they place every student in the correct math class that goes at the pace that the student can follow and do well in. (Scituate Departments) Proper placment of students in mathematics courses still remains an issue. Each head of department inform he other members to focus on encouraging students to look at achievement ad course stadndards. They also want a lot of communicating between teachers and students so they can build a trusting relationship. Scituate takes state tests very seriously and so do the teachers. They make sure to review the material that will be on the assessment tests so the students will be able to review the material before take the test. (Scituate Departments)

Overall Scituate High School is a pretty good school in all aspects academically and non academically. They meet a lot, not if all of the state's standards and usually they hire a lot of qualified teachers that are interested in having their students learn the curriculum. They also offer after school activities and sports that their students can join so they have some extra curricular things to participate in and it also keeps them out of trouble. If i was a parent that resided in Scituate or a teacher looking for a job I would definetly send my children to this high school or apply for a job here.
